Excuses, Excuses, Excuses
by Jared on September 30th, 2005
There comes a time in every person’s life and in the life of an organization that change has to happen. In marketing, we are all too sensitive of that fact because, more than likely…we’re behind it!
Marketers are more prone to be more proactive and more progressive than say, accountants whose job hinges on formulas and the interminable balance of credits and debits. We also know that change isn’t easy and when you bring a new idea to the table, chances are that someone will object to it. This got me thinking today about changes in our own personal lives and ways we influence change in ourselves and in others.
When someone objects to an idea, and has the power to block it, they sometimes give an excuse for doing so. Excuses, then, are ways of justifying not changing. Sometimes the excuses are valid and sometimes they’re not but there is one major thread that ties them all together - they all try to explain not doing something.
I myself use excuses like, for instance, I might say that I’m too busy being creative when in reality I am just off on a tangent with this blog. It doesn’t take time out of my day, in fact this type of writing gets my blood going and allows me to play around with ideas before I put pen to paper in my real job. I still use the excuse though because I want my co-workers to believe that I am, you know…working.
We hide behind excuses sometimes, because we are afraid, because we don’t want to change.
Case in point - The Guvernator and gay marriage…his excuse was the the people have voted the other way. That’s right, use an excuse from advancing the rights of minorities by justifying it in by will of the majority.
Stop using excuses folks and start speaking the truth. Its one more way to cleanse your soul and alleviate the noise in the message.
