Passing on Some Calming Advice for Incoming MBA Students

by Jared on April 27th, 2007

As soon as I got back from Nashville, my boss immediately wanted to know how things went during Owen Welcome Weekend.

I told him it was a great experience and I was floored by the personalities and the acumen of the incoming class. I also told him that the prospect of quitting my job, starting over in a new city and taking on the first two modules had me just a little intimidated.

To that, he laughed and pointed out that if it wasn’t a bit intimidating, it wasn’t worth my time. He also felt the need to send me the following snippet from today’s Overheard In The Office:

SUBJECT: When You Fall Over, There’s a Lot of Quacking and Pecking

Receptionist: I have great news!
Nurse: What?
Receptionist: I got accepted into grad school! But I’m scared.
Nurse: Why?
Receptionist: I haven’t been in school in a long time.
Nurse: You’ll be fine — it’s like falling off a duck’s back.

Overheard by: Eavesdropping grad student

What this has to do with anything, I have no idea but I did think this would be worth it to passing on in any case.

The first day of the Owen MBA Welcome Weekend, I have no idea how I survived

by Jared on April 21st, 2007

This weekend, I am in Nashville for a preview of what’s to come in August.

After working a half day and arriving in Nashville 3 hours late, I was seriously ready take to take a nap. Unfortunately, that was not to happen.

A quick press of my suit and some preening (yes, I preen - get over it) and I think I am ready.  It turns out, though, that nothing can prepare you for this kind of experience.

With all of the months of research, interviews, the GMAT and an assortment of neurotic panic attacks, I walked into Owen’s business school building and it all slammed down on me - this is real.

Luckily, I think the feeling placed me in good company.

The general consensus was that we were all having a great time meeting person after person and trying desperately to remember each other’s names. Tips, questions and handshakes flew faster than I had ever seen at any previous networking event.

The verdict? In the words of one of my esteemed co-workers, “It’s a good thing.”

This isn’t the kind of crazy you can outrun, apparently

Thursday - 12:30 PM…

I am staring at a marketing award application and contemplating how much better it would sound if any of what I was writing was true.

Then, an email came from an ex of mine with this header:

SUBJECT: You crept into my subconscious…

I respect this ex too much to publish the full e-mail but let’s just say this; it was about a very strange dream he had about me running away with his current boyfriend. This was one of those e-mails that just made me sit up and say WTF????

Now, these two have been together for a little more than a year and a half and I consider them both friends however, this is the kind of crazy I just didn’t need today.

Deciding to skip lunch, I went immediately to the gym. I pounded out 35 minutes on the treadmill, returned to the office and am now downing a green tea smoothie. The funny part? I just checked my e-mail and found a similar e-mail from another ex.

Given my morning, I have to conclude three things:

  1. Crazy has it in for me, today.
  2. I seriously need to re-consider the types of guys I’m dating.
  3. If you have a dream about an ex - please keep it to yourself.

The only good thing about this is now the marketing award seems much more appealing for some reason…

Ain’t nothin’ gonna break my stride!

by Jared on April 19th, 2007

It’s Thursday morning, 8:30 am and I’ve been in the office for 45 minutes. I’ve already…

  • Written one stop-gap sidebar article for our magazine,
  • Sent out 5 e-mails on 3 different projects,
  • Had a pedi-conference with the CEO,
  • And been given a mini-lecture by my boss about the chain of command because of said pedi-conference.

….I can already tell today is going to be a good day.

The point of this post is more just a re-cap more than anything else.

The iTunes Feed

I realize the iTunes feed has been wonky and I am taking steps to correct it. In fact, look for the last three episodes to be re-posted in rapid succession to get things straight in case you’ve been wondering why you’ve been getting old episodes under new titles.

Owen Welcome Weekend

Yes, I will be in Nashville this weekend for Vanderbilt-Owen’s Welcome Weekend. Look for blog postings at my OwenBloggers Feed as well as plenty of photos and/or video depending on how well I can balance things.

Next Episode

While I was in Atlanta, I did complete a new episode - more of a rant than anything else - and that should go up this weekend.

This should cover just about everything but in the meantime, send some love because I am totally in the marketing weeds right now and need to keep this momentum going to dig myself out.
