Being Right

by Jared on June 28th, 2007

Last night, I was able to attend a preview screening of Pangs of the Messiah, an interesting play at the DCJCC’s Theatre J. Besides being a thought-provoking commentary on the current state of Jewish settlers in Israel, it is played by some incredible, local actors.

In fact, the actors and director took some time to sit down at the end of the play and field questions from audience. One of those questions was “what do you believe to be the underling root of some of the religious extremism both portrayed inside Jewish culture as well as outside.” The answer, one actor responded, was each side’s desire to claim righteousness of their cause. Stated in other terms: their desire to be right.

The more I thought about that concept, the more I found it fascinating and relevant to our own situations as creative individuals and as participants in the modern office environment. Never before has it been truer; we desperately want to be right.

In order to bolster our cause of righteousness, it appears some of us will do just about anything. This includes manufacturing details that perhaps didn’t exist to justify actions we think are acceptable. Backbiting, negative politics, rumors; all of these are considered weapons in our arsenal in workplace warfare in order to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are right and that our actions are justified. More often than not, however, these actions only serve to damage our own cause and undermine our own credibility.

Don’t get me wrong; being right is a great thing. Many of the world’s greatest successes have sprung from the minds of people who, at their very core thought they were right. The paradox is that for some people being right isn’t just about being righteous; it is about making sure the other side knows they are wrong.

Sometimes, being right isn’t always just about occupying the high ground (if you will excuse the unintended, Jewish settler pun). Sometimes its’ about telling the truth and admitting your own complicity in your current situation.

Regardless, the play’s over-arching theme is that there are many sides to an argument. The brilliant question I thought the play left me asking is “are the results of my actions worth the price of being right?”

MBA Spin: Counting Down The Days

by Jared on June 26th, 2007

Now that I am back from a well-deserved beach trip, its time to focus on what’s really important; counting down the seconds before my next opportunity to get the heck of the office.

Of course, said opportunity is otherwise known as business school :).

To help us all keep track of how long I have until I am officially a poor grad student, I have set up a special countdown timer on the left sidebar. I will also be including the countdown in any further posts untill 5:00 PM ADT, July 17th, 2007.

FYI -

Enjoy!

ps….oh, how I love to use Natalie Imbruglia lyrics in blog postings!

Op Ed: 20-Something Predictions on the iPhone

by Jared on June 22nd, 2007

With a week to go before the official consumer release of the iPhone, I would like to make a couple of predictions about its initial launch success as well as its long-term viability.

Though I am certainly not a wireless industry expert; based on my experiences as a marketing blogger, a self-confessed Mac-head and most importantly a 20-something, I believe that these predictions are fairly solid. More

News From Around the 20SM World

by Jared on June 18th, 2007

Greetings Everyone!

First off, thanks for continuing to read and listen to 20-Something Marketing.  Judging by the influx of comments and questions, its really great to see that our content is continuing to hit a chord with 20-something professionals.

Second, please welcome John Dawe, the first regular contributor (other than myself) to 20SM.

John is going to be able to pick up the intellectual slack in the area of web marketing where I can only pretend to dabble as an “expert.”  His background as a marketing consultant is well-suited for this role and you can see his first official post below.  Please make him feel welcome by leaving him some comments and letting us know if you have any web marketing questions you think he can answer.

Lastly, with my move to Nashville rapidly approaching and the demands on my time are becoming numerous, I haven’t been able to get down to putting out a new show.

Not only am I trying get the Marketing Diner off to a fantastic start, but I am also already having to face the reality of homework for the first time in four years (it’s a quantitative boot camp since marketers are apparently prone to forgetting everything about basic math).

What this all means is that you will see at least a couple more episodes this summer (including highlights of my trip to VA beach), but if you are looking for fresh content - get your browser over to the Marketing Diner where we are putting out new shows on a regular basis.

Again, its awesome to have readers like you and I really am working hard to keep the ideas flowing.

The Web, Take Two

by John Dawe on June 16th, 2007

I recently read an article on Web 2.0 in RevenueToday Magazine. It’s a good primer if you’re moving into Web 2.0 marketing, or want to explain to your mom what you do for a living!

The Web, Take Two (link) - from RevenueToday.com

“Like new confections spilling out of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, the brain trusts at Web companies big and small over the last three years or so have spun out a brand new Web. Like candy, this version of the Web is flashier, full of speed, comes in a cool wrapper, has good stuff inside and is highly addictive.”

This is a great article on Web 2.0 and how smart businesses are tapping younger consumers by appealing to their tech-savvy lifestyle.

You can also sign up to receive a free subscription to Revenue Magazine at the site, which is full of great content.

Just how many gay geeks are there?

by Jared on June 15th, 2007

According to a recent post on Endgaget; quite a few.

Check out this recent post about an iPhone sighting. Scroll about a third of the way down the page and you’ll see what I mean.

I admit the guy with the iPhone is pretty cute but more interesting is how easy it is to get the fan-bois (intentional, btw) all riled up. Then again, technology AND hot guys? It’s like Christmas and my birthday all rolled into one!

…and yes, this is another post made during a VERY boring Friday.

Catch you guys later!
