Be Careful What You Blog About, People May Just Take You Seriously

by Jared on December 15th, 2007

Ever wonder what it would feel like to have one of your best friends calls you up to ask, “did you know you were quoted in Newsweek?” Yeah, now I know.

My friend Steph called me this morning to alert me to the fact that a recent post I did on my business school blog at OwenBloggers.com was quoted in a recent web-article on the word “w00t;”

“But w00t has done just the opposite: it started on the keyboard, made its way into SMS texting, then into writing, until it was finally spoken out loud….”This momentous selection is just another sign that the American lexicon is increasingly defined not by scholars but by raving lunatic bloggers like us,” writes Jared, a blogger on Owenbloggers.com”

Now normally, I don’t consider a ton of what I write to appeal to mass audiences. In fact, the very nature of writing about business and marketing makes me, by default, a niche blogger. That’s exactly why when someone tells me that a popular newsmagazine thinks I am on-point enough to cite, I begin to realize that blogging is a much more powerful tool than most people think.

Think about it, where else would you be able to add “have been quoted in Newsweek” to your list of accomplishments in an interview?

Media Alert: 20-Something Marketing Adds New Global Contributor

by dash on July 17th, 2007

Chief Contributor’s Note:

Today, 20-Something Marketing added another new contributor. Daksh has a fantastic, global view of marketing and his voice will add new depth and perspective to the blog. Here’s an introduction to him, in his own words.

It is a privilege to share some thoughts at this fantastic forum. Jared, thank you so much for being so kind and inviting me.

About me

My name is Daksh, and I am based out of India’s capital city New Delhi. I hold a technology mba and an undergraduate in computers engineering from Indian schools. I also have a KM certification from LTU, Sweden. Apart from 20-Something Marketing I blog here at http://themarketingblog.wordpress.com

Jared and I

My friendship with Jared dates back to the time since he had launched his podcast on iPhone ( mind you it has been quite a while since that podcast was featured. At that time probably Jared was one of the earliest podcasters to feature a show on iPhone.

Since then, thanks to our common interests in blogging, podcasting and not to forget “marketing” have lead to many discussions among the two of us. Be it the b-school scenario in US, be it podcasting or even rural marketing in India. Coming back to Jared, what I like about Jared is the manner in which he conducts his podcasts.

A background in technology coupled with an MBA degree makes me more of a techno-marketer. Probably, that is the reason why I am here to lend in some more inputs to this rocking platform for 20 somethings..

Allright, I would sign-off right now and would be back with an interesting story in my next post.

News From Around the 20SM World

by Jared on June 18th, 2007

Greetings Everyone!

First off, thanks for continuing to read and listen to 20-Something Marketing.  Judging by the influx of comments and questions, its really great to see that our content is continuing to hit a chord with 20-something professionals.

Second, please welcome John Dawe, the first regular contributor (other than myself) to 20SM.

John is going to be able to pick up the intellectual slack in the area of web marketing where I can only pretend to dabble as an “expert.”  His background as a marketing consultant is well-suited for this role and you can see his first official post below.  Please make him feel welcome by leaving him some comments and letting us know if you have any web marketing questions you think he can answer.

Lastly, with my move to Nashville rapidly approaching and the demands on my time are becoming numerous, I haven’t been able to get down to putting out a new show.

Not only am I trying get the Marketing Diner off to a fantastic start, but I am also already having to face the reality of homework for the first time in four years (it’s a quantitative boot camp since marketers are apparently prone to forgetting everything about basic math).

What this all means is that you will see at least a couple more episodes this summer (including highlights of my trip to VA beach), but if you are looking for fresh content – get your browser over to the Marketing Diner where we are putting out new shows on a regular basis.

Again, its awesome to have readers like you and I really am working hard to keep the ideas flowing.

Requesting Your Help With The Next Big Idea

by Jared on June 1st, 2007

Between compulsively expanding “to-do” list prior to entering b-school and trying to cram whatever fun I can into the weekends I have left, there seems to be a nagging feeling that I am missing something.

Usually, summer is the time you take a break. This year however, between the debut of The Marketing Diner and school starting on Aug 13th, you can imagine that a break is the last thing I am going to get. There are times, however, when you get that pang of hunger for inspiration. There are times that just lend themselves to being the right time to come up with that next great idea.

For this, I wanted to pose the question to you, the people that make this “big idea” worthwhile. What should we do with the show? What is the next big idea for “20-Something Marketing?”

Here are some ideas that I batted around in my head:

1) Create an feature series guide on how to survive life as a 20-Something professional
2) Pass the torch onto a new host
3) Discontinue new content creations and focus on MD and OB, exclusively..

This is the time to comment, or if not to publicly comment to e-mail me and tell me what you think. Should the show go on?

Media Alert: Marketing Diner 2.0 Has Launched!!!!

by Jared on May 24th, 2007

Friends, marketers, business-people…lend me your ears! 20SM is proud to annouce the re-launch of the The Marketing Diner…

Show Description:

The marketing diner is a show…ok, a podcast about one thing: marketers feeding their brands, not their egos.

In other words; this is what happens when three marketers get together, drop the pretenses and examine the trends, creative politics and elements of consumer culture that drive real results for real organizations…all while having a hell of a lot of fun doing it!

First Episode:

MDiner Episode #2.1 – Web 2.0…is it, really?

The Marketing Diner is back and it’s got a beef with Web 2.0…

Why start out a marketing podcast about marketing web 2.0? Because we’re that serious about seperating the marketers that can use it to feed their brands from those that use just use it to feed their egos. (yes, we see the irony, now just get on with it!)

Tune in for the debut of our re-branded show, meet the new hosts and see the begining of the next powerhouse, marketing podcast.

…as an aside, this has been an incredible project to start and it promises to be an excellent next step if you are hungry for intense discussion about the most pressing issues in marketing and business today. Check it out at http://marketingdiner.com.
